우주는 일반적으로 존재의 총칭으로 정의된다. 우주는 행성, 별, 은하(성운), 은하간의 공간, 극미한 티끌, 어두운 물질과 어두운 에너지로 구성된 물질과 에너지를 포함한다.
우리가 보는 우주 부분은 관찰할 수 있는 우주이다. 우주의 직경은 약 91억 광년(光年)이다. 우주의 넓이는 알 수 없으나 무한대이다. 우주의 과학적 관찰은 우주는 진화한다고 추론하고 있다. 이런 관찰들은 우주는 항상 확장하고 있으며, 이런 물리적 법칙에 지배당하고 있다고 보고 있다. 빅뱅이론은 우주발달을 설명하는 유력한 우주모델이다. 이 우주 모델이 맞는다면, 우주의 나이는 13조 억년이 된다고 하겠다. 우주의 공간은 팽창하고 있으며, 팽창 율은 증가하고 있다고 보는 것이다. 우주의 운명에 대한 여러 이론이 있는데, 물리학자들은 빅뱅이론에 선행하는 이론은 현재로선 불확실하다고 보고 있으며, 현존의 우주는 많은 우주가운데 하나일수도 있다는 가설을 제시하기도 한다.

Assuming that the prevailing model is correct, the age of the Universe is measured to be 13.798 ± 0.037 billion years.[9][10] Space in the Universe is expanding, and the rate of its expansion is increasing.There are many competing theories about the ultimate fate of the Universe. Physicists remain unsure about what, if anything, preceded the Big Bang. Many refuse to speculate, doubting that any information from any such prior state could ever be accessible. There are various multiverse hypotheses, in which some physicists have suggested that the Universe might be one among many universes that likewise exist.
